(1) Lee, Edmund Jennings, Lee of Virginia, 1642-1892 [Reprint], Baltimore, MD: Clearfield Company, Inc., 2003, p. 15:
THE LEES OF ENGLAND.
THE earliest records of England contain references to many families of this name, though spelt in many different forms. The various counties of England have been from early times dotted with Lee villages, towns, and rivers; there was scarcely a county that did not contain several Lee seats, mansions, or manors. In view of the prevalence of this name, it will be readily acknowledged that the accurate tracing of the descendants of any special progenitor is no easy task. . . .
The following sketches of ten of the principal Lee families in England are from the pen of Mr. J. Henry Lea, of Fairhaven, Mass., who has devoted considerable time to the study of the genealogies of the families of this name. His sketches may, therefore, be considered thoroughly accurate and reliable. They are necessarily very brief. These ten families are:
[Note by compiler: The compiler is not certain which, if any, of these families is the family from which William LEIGH, the husband of Mary DAWKES, descended.]
(2) William LEIGH, the husband of Mary DAWKES, is considered a "qualifying ancestor" for purposes of membership in the Jamestowne Society. The Jamestowne Society has rejected at least one membership application of a descendant of William LEA, the husband of Catherine IRONMONGER. Therefore, the compiler believes that there is no proof that William LEIGH was an ancestor of William LEA.
The following criteria are used to determine whether an early settler may be included as a qualifying ancestor for purposes of membership in the Jamestowne Society: the individual (a) was a stockholder in the London Company or the Virginia Company; (b) owned land on Jamestown Island or lived on the Island prior to 1700 (owning land in a neighboring area or neighboring county does NOT of itself qualify an individual; (c) was a resident in Virginia at the time of the 1624/25 Muster; or (d) served as Governor, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Attorney General, Clerk of the General Court, Member of the Council or House of Burgesses prior to 1700; these persons shall be conclusively presumed to have had their domiciles on Jamestown Island during their terms of office.
(3) Some sources claim that the William LEIGH who came from England to VA was a son of John LEE and Joyce ROMNEY of Coton, Shropshire, England. However, the William LEE who was a son of John LEE and Joyce ROMNEY died young, without issue. See Notes (4) and (5) below.
(4) Some sources also claim that William LEIGH came from London to VA on the ship "Assurance de Lo" in 1635. The ship "Assurance de Lo" did sail from London to Virginia in 1635 and did have a passenger aboard named William LEE, aged 36 (See Note (6) below), but there is no proof that this passenger was a son of John LEE and Joyce ROMNEY.
