About Captain Howard D. Bode, USN
Captain Bode was given command of the USS Oklahoma after the previous captain was relieved. His time was spent in naval exercises in the Pacific Ocean, and he finished his command at 7:30 am on 7 December 1941, when he left the ship to board the Maryland.
He was aboard her when Oklahoma capsized.[4] At the Battle of Savo Island, Captain Bode commanded USS Chicago (CA-29). After the battle, upon learning that he was to be censured for his actions, Captain Bode shot himself on 19 April 1943.
