About Captain James Waterman Buddington
Capt. James W. Buddington was the captain of the Margarett, the last whaling ship to ever sail out of Connecticut. The schooner left New London on 24 September 1908 and returned to port April 1909, closing out 124 years of commercial whaling in the state.
He was a lifelong sailor from a famous sailing family and was part of numerous notable expeditions, including serving as cabin boy during the salvage of the HMS Resolute in 1855.
He resided at 141 Monument Street in Groton Bank, in a surviving home he built in 1860, right near his father and stepmother at 149 Monument.
