Brief Life History of James Seaton
When Capt James Seaton Montgomery was born on 10 May 1693, in Donegal, County Donegal, Ireland, his father, Hugh Montgomerie, was 35 and his mother, Jane Janette Patrick Edgar, was 28. He married Anne Thompson in 1715, in Derry, County Londonderry, Ireland. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 1 daughter. He immigrated to Ireland in 1733. He registered for military service in 1756. He died on 11 September 1756, in Catawba, Halifax, Virginia, United States, at the age of 63, and was buried in Catawba, Halifax, Virginia, United States.

A tentative reconstruction of the life of Capt. James Montgomery (1690-1756): CAPT. JAMES MONTGOMERY, Gentleman, was a member of a prominent Scottish family of that name from Northern Ireland. He was born around 1690 in County Donegal, a son of Capt. Hugh Montgomery of Scotland, late of Ireland. According to his family, they were closely related to Genl. Richard Montgomery who died at the storming of Quebec in 1775 (source: letters of Hon. John Caldwell Calhoun, South Carolina statesman). Genl. Richard was born in 1736 at Swords, County Dublin, Ireland, and was a descendant of the Montgomery family of Hessilhead, Scotland, a cadet branch of the great Scottish House of Eglinton of Ayrshire. According to "The Draper Papers" - Col. John Montgomery sketch - by Dr. Lyman C. Draper, Capt. James fought a duel and fled to Scotland. He married Anne Thomson in Ireland, a relative of the famous Scottish poet, James Thomson of Roxburgh, author of "the Seasons". Capt. James Montgomery and his family emigrated to America in 1733. They landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania but soon settled at Chestnut Level in Lancaster County. In 1746 Capt. James sent his sons Robert and John to investigate land in Augusta County, Virginia. Robert bought 654 acres on Catawba Creek in Borden's Middle Tract from Benjamin Borden for the price of "20 English pounds and two uncommon large bells" he brought from Pennsylvania. Capt. James became a prominent man in the Catawba Creek community and was referred to as "Gentleman" in contemporary references. He was an officer in the New Derry Presbyterian Congregation. He was appointed a Justice of the Augusta County Court, overseer of road construction in the region, and served as Captain of a company of Virginia Militia from Augusta County during the French and Indian War. He was killed in a fight with Indians at Jackson River Virginia in 1756. After his estate was settled, his wife Anne, returned to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with one of her children and remained there. His sister, Catherine Montgomery, was born in 1684 near Convoy House in County Donegal, Ireland. She married James Patrick Calhoun in Ireland and emigrated to America at the same time as her brother, James, and his family in 1733. She was murdered by Indians at age 76 along with 22 others, including several children, on January 1, 1760, at Long Canes Creek, Abbeville District, South Carolina. Capt. James and Anne Montgomery had the following children: Robert, who married Mary White; Capt. John, who married Anne Agnes Crockett; Samuel who married Margaret Nicholas; Capt. James who married Mrs. Mary Robinson, and secondly Cynthia Crockett; Joseph who married Rachel Ramsey; Hugh who married Lady Mary Moore, and secondly, Catherine Sloan; William who married Margaret Briherly; Anne who married Col. William Lewis.

His other sons as they grew up, settled on and around the same tract.................very clannish, and an insult to one was an insult to all. They were men of fine sense, kind and friendly. <p>James Montgomery was a Captain in the Botetourt Militia. He and his family lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (now Augusta County, Virginia) about 1746.</p> <p> SOURCES: "THE GENEALOGICALHISTORY of the DAWES FAMILY of BOONEVILLE,</p> <p>MISSISSIPPI", Page # 339-340</p> <p> James Montgomery was born about 1690 near Donegal, Ireland. He and his wife Ann Thomason migrated to America about 1733, about the same time his sister Catherine and her husband, Patrick Calhoun (grandfather of Vice-President John C. Calhoun) came to this country. They came to Pennsylvania, and , for a time, lived in Lancaster County, probably at Chestnut Level.</p> <p> In 1746 James sent his sons, Robert and John to Virginia to but land. On June 19, 1746 they acquired 654 acres on Catawba Creek in Augusta (now Botetourt) County. Robert and John then returned to Pennsylvania to bring back two large bells to be used as partial payment for the land and to bring the remainder of the family to Virginia.</p> <p> James Montgomery served as a justice of the Augusta County Court, was a captain in the Militia in the Shawnee Expedition, and an officer in the New Derry Presbyterian Church.</p> <p> He was one of the most prominent citizens in the Catawba Community. He died in 1756 and indications are that he was killed by Indians on Jackson River in Virginia.
