Thomas3 Carman (John2, John1) was born in 1668 at Hempstead, Long Island and died sometime after 7 December 1759 and before 1775 when his daughter's will calls him deceased, in Hempstead, Queens, New York. He married abt 1697 at St George's Church, Hempstead, Queens, New York, Mary Stites (surname not known for sure but based on land transactions with Richard Stites that Thomas winds up on, probably)

"Thomas was doubtless a farmer (HTR 5:155). He was very likely a whaleman, too; at one time at least (CEM 324). He served the town of Hempstead as assessor in 1708, 1709, 1719/21, 1728 & 1729 and perhaps other years (HTR). In the 1698 census he name appears followed by those of Mary and a Joseph Carman ... has prompted claims that Joseph was son... However Joseph-3, brother of Thomas-3, was a resident of Hempstead in 1699 and doubtless in 1698 too, and he does not appear elsewhere on the census... The name of Thomas Carman often appears in the town books of Hempstead, especially in connection with real estate transactions. He was a large property holder... his home always seems to have been at Westbury, "at the plains edge", near the highways to Merrick and Newbridge Neck. In 1755 he was listed as a Slave holder (DHNY 3:861) His last will in which he called himself old was dated 7 Dec 1759 and prob. 1761. He mentions s. Thomas; daus. Mary, Sarah, Hannah, Ruth & Phebe (surnames not given); son-in-law Jacob Hickes; "cousin" (very likely meaning nephew) John Smith of Herricks (see Hannah-3); the last two males being named executors. The rent from all his houses and lands were to go to daus. Mary and Sarah, during their lives and up their deaths, to the other children outright (WNYHS 6:36) - "John-1 Carman of Hempstead, Long Island and Some of his Descendants Thru His Son John-2", Henry Alanson Tredwell, Jr.

Children of Thomas Carman and Mary Stites:

Joseph Carman (questionable)

Mary Carman - born about 1699 at Bethpage, Queens, New York, died a spinster in 1776 in Hempstead, Queens, New York. Probably a mute.

Sarah Carman - born about 1702 at Bethpage, Queens, New York, died a spinster between 1759-1775 in Hempstead, Queens, New York. Also a mute.

Hannah Carman

Ruth Carman

Phoebe Carman

Thomas Carman

Assigned as children by Charles Werner in "Genealogies of Long Island Families, but questionable:

Abigail Carman - this is most likely a first wife of Thomas Carman rather than a sister

Samuel Carman
