About Captain John Colt, Sr.

edit 12/28/2020 Much of the text below the following line is false and has been proved otherwise in a 2005 article in The American Genealogist. The article is attached as a jpg to the Docs section of the Media tab. All that is known of his origins is that he first appears in the Quarter Court on 5 June 1656 and that he was a servant of Mr. Megat (Joseph Mygatt) Dea. Joseph Mygatt and his future wives, Mary Skinner (NOT her sister Ann) and Hester Edwards, were also servants in Hartford at the same time. Mary Skinner was at Mr. Megat in the following April, and Hester at the time was a maid to widow Ursula (unknown) Gibbons. Ursula Gibbons

He later lived with his son, Benjamin, as a widower, and the gift deed of his property as "John Coult of Windsor" to his son, "Benjamin Coult of Windsor" in 25 Sep 1713 was the last known proof. He probably died before 24 Jan 1715 when he did not join with his sons "Joseph, Jabez, and Benjamin Colt" in an agreement related to the new east-side meetinghouse.

No birth, baptism, or probate records have been found as of 2005 (date of article) and most likely to 2020 (since no other reference was found in applicable journals searching his and family member's names.).

The text below the following line appears to be a duplication of the same info of sources BEFORE the article cited above from 2005 at attached to this profile.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

It has been written: John Colt may have come from England at 11 yerars of age in 1636 to Dorchester, MA as an apprentice to Reverend Hooker and/or Joseph Mygatt (or Megat?). He is said to have been at Hartford, CT by 1638 and then at Windsor, CT where he lived at Podunk. If he was 11 years old in 1636, he would have been born in 1625. This has not been verified.

It has also been written: the earliest evidence of John Colt in America is the Court case at Hartford, CT on 05 June 1656 when he and friends were fined "for playing cards and that at an unseasonable time of the night". All of the young men so fined were in their late teens or early twentys which would seem to indicate that John Colt was born in the mid-1630s. This has not been verified.

For 1658-1660 John Colt was employed by Joseph Mygatt who was a weaver. Mary Skinner was employed by Joseph Mygatt and Ann Skinner was employed by John Allyn at about this time. All of this was at Hartford, CT. Mary and Ann were sisters.

John Colt married first in about 1660 at Hartford, CT to Mary Skinner. They had 2 children together. Some have claimed that John Colt married first to Ann Skinner, but this has been verified as untrue.

John Colt was at Podunk, CT [land near Windsor, CT purchased from the Podunk Indians] in 1665 when he paid 6s to raise the minister's salary. It was at about this time that he married second to Hester Edwards and they settled at Podunk, CT and had 6 children there. John Colt was a Freeman at Windsor, CT on the 1669 list. John Colt was on the June 1672 list of "persons on the East Side of the Great River [Connecticut River]". During King Philips War, John Colt reported at a September 1675 Council of War at Hartford that "he was shot at by an Indian" and for this reason troops were recalled to Hartford, CT. In May of 1680 John Colt signed a petition for a new town [later South Windsor and then East Windsor or perhaps Glastonbury] on the east side of the river [Connecticut River] at Windsor, CT. He was listed there in a property assessment in 1691 with "two persons under age plus Joseph and Abraham, his sons of age".

Some have claimed that John Colt married a third time to Lydia fitch, but this is no longer believed to be the case. It is now believed that there was no third marriage.

Son Abraham Colt (1666-1734) married in 1690 at Windsor, CT to Hannah Loomis (1663-1730) and they settled at Glastonbury, CT and had 3 children.

Granddaughter Mary Alice Colt (1696-1734), daughter of Abraham Colt (1666-1734), married in about 1711 at Glastonbury, CT to Ebenezer Keeney (1672-1723) and they are believed to have had 2 children there.
