JUDGE/CAPT. STERLING2 COCKE (WILLIAM1) was born June 15, 1789 in Hawkins County, TN, and died August 12, 1859 in Mississippi. He married (1) ELIZA T. MASENGILL 1814 in Grainger Co., TN, daughter of MICHAEL MASENGILL. She was born Unknown, and died Unknown. He married (2) CAROLINE F. JONES5 1818 in Springfield, KY. She was born February 17, 1797, and died November 1, 1857.

Notes for JUDGE/CAPT. STERLING COCKE:

   "The first lawyer of prominence in Hawkins County was William Cocke, who is mentioned elsewhere. He had two or three sons, who also became lawyers. One of them, John Cocke, located in Grainer county; another, Sterling Cocke, remained in Hawkins County. He was admitted to practice in 1812, and six years later was made attorney-general, in which position he continued for many years. He was not looked upon as a lawyer of great ability, but was a man of strict integrity and of pleasing manners." -- Goodspeed's History of Hawkins County
