William was born in 1732. William Payne was the "uncle" of Dolly Payne Madison. His father Josias Payne devised to him a tract of property of 400 acres in Fluvanna Co. which he made his residence and became a prominent figure in the community.
He married twice. He and his first wife Mary Barrett were married on the 6th of March in 1755. They had a daughter named Ann Payne born 18th Sept 1759. Mary died Mar 3rd 1771 at age 24. Mary Barret and Will Payne are listed as "both in this parish" in the Register listing their marriage.
William then married Susanna Thompson, daughter of George Thompson.She was the grand-daughter of Joseph Thompson the First sheriff of Albemarle Co.VA.
