Member of the House of Burgess, Va. Society of the Cincinnati. Taken prisoner in the Battle of Germantown, Marylnad, during the Revolutionary Wars. he did not retune to his regiment.
After the War, he went to North Carolina, in 1784. Then later to what is now Nashville Tn., where he died. Suffered many hardships with the Nashville Indians,recieved bounty lands and half pay. Land warrent prior to 1784. Married second wife mary barnett.

According to The Bateses by Worth S. Ray: Josias Payne Jr. was the son of Josias Payne and grandson of George Payne who married Mary Woodson. Mary Woodson was the sister of John Woodson who married Judith Tarleton (daughter of Stephen Tarleton and Susanna Bates. Josias' had a sister Anne Payne who married William Harrison in 1723. He moved from Goochland of Pittsylvania County, Val, to the Watauga Valley in TN., and afterwards to the vicinity of Nashville.
