Carlo Gonzaga, duc de Nevers et Rethel

Charles II Gonzaga From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Charles II Gonzaga (1609-1631) was the son of Charles I, Duke of Mantua and Catherine of Mayenne, he was the Duke of Nevers and Rethel. In December 1627 when Charles was 18 he married his cousin Maria Gonzaga, the marriage was arranged by Vincenzo II Gonzaga. Charles and Maria had three children: Eleonora (1628-1686), who married in 1651 Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor. Maria Charles (1629-1665). Charles was never the proper Duke of Mantua since he died ten years before Charles did. When Charles's father died in 1637 Charles's eight year old son became Duke of Mantua, his widow Maria acted as regent. His daughter Eleonora became Holy Roman Emperess.

    Carlo Gonzaga, Duc de Rethel was born in 1609.3 He was the son of Carlo I de Gonzaga, 8th Duca di Mantova and Catherine de Mayenne.2,3 He married Maria Gonzaga, Principessa di Mantova, daughter of Francesco IV Gonzaga, 5th Duca di Mantova and Margherita di Savoia, Principessa di Savoia, on 25 December 1627.3 He died on 31 August 1631 at Cavriana.3
