About Caterina Lo Cascio

Caterina Lo Cascio was born on December 15, 1869 in Altavilla Milicia, Palermo, Sicily.

In 1898 she and her daughter Carmella Rizzo sailed from Naples on the SS Neustria and arrived at Ellis Island on April 22, 1898. There were 8 passengers on the same page of the passenger list from Altavilla Milicia:

  • Giuseppe Grana? Graziano? (age 25, traveling to Brooklyn to join brother Francesco)
  • Ciro Cirrincione (age 26)
  • Salvatore La Marca (age 25)
  • Giuseppe Parisi (age 41)
  • Caterina Lo Cascio (age 29)
  • Carmella Rizzo
  • Antonino Lombardo (age 48)
  • Frank Lombardo (age 17) The ship they sailed on vanished without a trace 10 years later after sailing from New York on October 27, 1908.

She died on March 1, 1907 in Chicago. Her death record lists an address of 231 Larrabee.

She was buried the following day at Calvary Cemetery in Evanston, Illinois, but as of June 2016 there is no gravestone. She is buried in Section T, Block 29, Lot 318 where her 13 day old daughter Maria Laureta Romano had previously been buried. There was also another burial 7 months after Maria Laureta Romano, a 3 month old with the name listed at the cemetery as Castezio Burio and might possibly be Castrenze Borino. It seems that Joseph Romano bought the grave to buy his 13 day old daughter who died from pneumonia in April 1901. Then in November his brother Isidoro Romano's wife's parents 3 month old son Castrenze Borino also died from pneumonia and was buried here. Then in 1907 his wife Caterina Lo Cascio died and was buried here as well. However, the mother of that baby would have been 43 years old so it may take further research to confirm this.

To find this grave you should look for a taller gray stone near the edge of Section T with the names Michael Bertuccio and Mary J Bertuccio which is Block 29, Lot 7. The graves in this section T appear to set head-to-head. If you stand at the edge of section T and look towards the outside wall of the cemetery at the other side of section T you will notice that the Bertuccio stone faces towards the right and there is another row of graves behind it facing towards the left. These are all Block 29. The ones facing the left are odd numbers. If you follow this line of grave stones all the way to the fence you will find Rex Corfman very close to the wall in grave 311. Head-to-head with him would be grave 312. In-between that grave 312 and the fence you would find grave 314, 316 and then grave 318 where Caterina Lo Cascio was buried. Cemetery maps only seem to go up to grave 306 even though they have burials listed at higher grave numbers.
