About Catharina Fremling

  • Born in Viipuri: estimation 1695 (or earlier), and it's not completely impossible that Katarina is the same person as Karin, born 1692.
  • Child Anna Catharina, 29 November 1716, Viipuri. Church book record: [http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=6883791, see middle of page] - Remark: her sister Anna Fremling is mentioned on previous page as Godmother, witness or similar for another birth also (in addition to this one).
  • Resident in Viipuri at least 1719-1728. After this, it is indicated that she might have left somewhere, but the text is not all readable as to where, see: Viborgs stads svenska församling - Pää- ja rippikirjat 1719-1728 (I Aa:1), jakso 66; Kansallisarkisto: [http://digi.narc.fi/digi/view.ka?kuid=6883299] / Viitattu 27.4.2019
  • Dead 1742 in Viipuri, buried 6 September 1742 (meaning the reference to leaving the town wasn't final).

The research regarding the Russian Captain Semen Kotheint who was mentioned in the books is open still.

Mikko Laakso's wild guesses:

  1. "That's a Jewish name? Semen Cohen(it)?" Naah. Not an officer in the Russian army.
  2. The daughter of a Fleming and the daughter of bishop Carstenius... No, she'd rather marry somebody, such as... Simon von Kothen. In interpreting this speculation, it should not go unnoticed that:
  • Katarina's grandfather is Per Fleming, till Hannula who used to be the Governor of Saarenmaa (Ösel).
  • The von Kothen family is a Baltic German family members of which have been influential in Saarenmaa.

However, there have been guesses towards the von Kothen family and the Kalitin family, which both have roots in Livonia, are of compatible level of nobility and had connections and presence in Viborg at right time. Kalitin family might also have compatible movements with Fremling's during 18th century. von Konow is also a name seen nearby and that might have been heard by the priest as Kotheint.

(Sune)
