Catherine "Kate" B. McCartney(Hallock) Died 1927 in Tulare, Tulare County, California

===========================================================================================================================================================

Kate McCartney (Hallock)

She was the fifth of fifteen (known) children born to James De Groat Hallock, and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Hallock (Markle), in the St. Vincent / Meaford area of Grey County, Ontario, in 1863.

Although already unusual in terms of family size (at 15) it is reasonable to further suspect, that in fact, the total number of children born to James and Sarah, was actually, 18. (See Sources: Memoir of E.A.Whitney – forward comment per to the 18 children of James D.and Sarah Ann Hallock)

Many, if not most Hallock family researchers appear to accept as at least probable, 18 children. However, it seems equally true, that the names of those three remaining children, at least presently, are unknown. While many genealogies tracing their ancestry to this same family group do identify between two and three additional children to the common fifteen, they are usually merely identified as “Unknown Child” . For this reason, I have decided not to include “Unknown” profiles to the Hallock tree. Should a discovery offering a reasonable identification, I will modify my site accordingly. Also, if as I am inclined to accept, the E.A. Whitney Memoir as a credible source for information on this specific Hallock family group (Everitt Alton Whitney being the grandson of James and Sarah Ann Hallock) by number of children, according to gender: Twelve girls, and Six boys it would imply that I am missing three unidentified son's of James and Sarah Ann

1871

  • Catherine Hallock is first identified on the Census Canada Enumeration for the year: 1871, for Ontario, St. Vincent, Grey County. In the household of: James D. Hallock and Sarah Ann Hallock (Catherine’s parents)

She is recorded as being age 8. That correlates to a birth year of 1863. (See Profile: Sources for: Sarah Ann Elizabeth Hallock (Markle) Census of Canada, 1871 Sarah Ann Elizabeth Hallock

Living in the family household in St. Vincent, Grey County, Ontario is where Catherine resides until the next event of historical record identifying her.

1878

  • Catherine Hallock is next referenced with her record of marriage to Joseph McCartney, on September 18, 1878 at Sydenham, Grey County, Ontario, Canada. She was 16 years old. (Overview conclusion: FamilySearch public tree profile, supporting documentation)

During the next two years, neither she nor Joseph are cited anywhere in Ontario. The likely reason for this is given in the details for the following wedding announcement.

1880

  • The 1880 Nippissing, Muskoka, District of Parry Sound, Ontario record of marriages, documents the wedding announcement for Asa A. Gamble and Sarah M. Hallock, who was Catherine’s sister.(See Sources). Included as part of the announcement, is the information pertaining to the “Witnesses” of the marriage. Recorded are: Joseph and Catherine McCartney, of Spencer. (Sources: Muskoka & Parry Sound)

Apparently, I had missed an important detail concerning the impression of silence on the Canadian record between 1878 and 1880 for Joseph and Catherine. Likely, because they probably were not in Canada….at least not during 1880.

And truthfully, I had overlooked Spencer, Marathon County, Wisconsin as a potential residence, even though after researching Catherine’s parents, and grandparents, one thing I had discovered, was the special association between the Hallock family, and the State of Wisconsin.

In 1850, Catherine’s Grandfather, William B. Hallock had relocated his family, wife: Anna and youngest children, from Ontario, to Wisconsin: first to Iron Ridge, Dodge County, and then to Irving, Jackson County. (See Geni Profiles and Sources for: James De Groat Hallock and William B. Hallock re: the Hallock family and Wisconsin: US Federal Census’ 1850, 1860,1870. Also see: 1870 US General Land Office Records, 1796-1907

In doing so, William B. Hallock established on ongoing association between his Hallock family, and the state of Wisconsin. In fact, the apparently often undocumented association actually made more difficult the process of research, from the vantage of expectation of residence. And this association endured with some of William’s children, and grandchildren.

If as some research claims, that William had been involved with a successful mining venture in 1848-1850, it could offer some insight as to the perennial Hallock interest in Wisconsin (See: Profile, Sources for: William B. Hallock Rootsweb WorldConnect Project affiliated citations).

I don’t have hard evidence that William’s descendants benefited from his mining endeavor, but it warrants some consideration as to what it was that perpetually drew his descendants to the same region of Wisconsin.
At least one of William’s son’s, Norman Stevenson Hallock established a permanent family homestead in Clark County, WI as well as, later land holdings.

Although William and Anna apparently returned to Ontario sometime between1860 and 1870, at the urging of their son, Norman, they return once more to Wisconsin in 1870 and there live out the remainder of their lives. Both are buried in Granton, Clark County. (See: The biography of Norman Stevenson Hallock, Overview: Norman Stevenson Hallock )

And perhaps equally pertinent in the association between Wisconsin and Catherine & Joseph McCartney is that two of her sisters: Harriet Ann Allen (Hallock) and Clara Whitney (Hallock) had also settled with their husbands and children in Clark County, Wisconsin. At least one of her brothers: Norman Hallock also marries and settles in Loyal, Clark County, Wisconsin

And finally, toward the end of his life, Catherine’s father: James De Groat Hallock likewise migrated to Clark County, Wisconsin following his residence in Whatcom County, Washington State (within the household of daughter: Minnie Bliss (Hallock) and supposedly he had sustained a residence in New Port, Oregon sometime between 1900 and 1910, by which time James is living in the home of daughter: Harriet Allen (See profile, Sources, James De Groat Hallock E.A. Whitney Memoir and 1910 US Federal Census for: Loyal, Clark County, Wisconsin: Wyatt Allen household

Although I have not been able to specifically trace and identify Catherine and Joseph by Wisconsin state records for Spencer, WI., I would nonetheless bargain that their presence there was connected somehow with another Hallock family member also located in Marathon County. Joseph McCartney’s family has never evidenced a connection with Wisconsin. That leaves Catherine’s family association as the most likely basis for their brief residence there.

I don’t believe it coincidental, that a reference made in the E.A. Whitney Memoir regarding the road connecting Spencer, Wisconsin, to Clark County is commented on. It likely also has a Hallock connection that would make sense for Catherine's residence there in 1880

Whatever the precise circumstances concerning Catherine and Joseph’s residence in Wisconsin, it would not have predated their 1878 marriage, and did not last later than August of 1881 at which time they were once more in central Ontario for the birth of their first child (Joseph Burton McCartney: See FamilySearch public tree profile supporting documents, following this Overview).

There are many reasons I could speculate as to why this brief chapter of their lives in the U.S. probably went without much acknowledgment. However, because it was not a sustained history, it only merits recognition because of its otherwise negated possibility for residence, and as a latent expression of the Hallock family and Wisconsin.

Corroborating material affirming a latent connection between the Hallock family, James, Sarah Ann, and Catherine’s siblings formerly of St. Vincent, Grey County, identified in: Muskoka, District 131 found in the 1881 Census of Canada, District 131 Muskoka, Sub-district Z, Townships of Pringle, Himsworth, Gurd, Nippissing (Sources)

This census record shows that James and Sarah Ann had relocated their family to Muskoka since the previous Census year of 1871. They reside next door to Sarah Ann’s parents: Andrew and Elizabeth Markle. It is here, from Nippissing that Catherine and Joseph are referenced as Witnesses attending Sarah M. Hallock’s wedding. (See Sources: 1880 Muskoka & Parry Sound District marriages)

1881

  • During the same general 1881 Census of Canada, but for the Township of St. Vincent, Grey County, Ontario Catherine and Joseph are separately identified. She is recorded as age 18, birth year: 1863 Also recorded in 1881 is the birth of Catherine and Joseph’s first child: Joseph Burton McCartney

1881 Catherine Hallock in entry for Joseph Burton McCartney, "Ontario Births, 1869-1911" url https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM7W-D4T Citation "Ontario Births, 1869-1911," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM7W-D4T : accessed 12 February 2016), Catherine Hallock in entry for Joseph Burton Mccartney, 10 Aug 1881; citing Birth, St. Vincent, Grey, Ontario, Canada, citing Archives of Ontario, Toronto; FHL microfilm 1,845,579.

Combined 1881 Census and Birth records for the McCartney household, independently identify Catherine, respectively.

1884

  • Daughter: Lilly May McCartney was born in St. Vincent, Grey, Ontario. See below:

1884 Cathorine Hallock in entry for Lilly May Mccartney, "Ontario Births, 1869-1911" url https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM38-LF4 Citation "Ontario Births, 1869-1911," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FM38-LF4 : accessed 12 February 2016), Cathorine Hallock in entry for Lilly May Mccartney, 13 Apr 1884; citing Birth, St Vincent, Grey, Ontario, Canada, citing Archives of Ontario, Toronto; FHL microfilm 1,845,867.

  • Between 1884 and 1895, eight of nine McCartney children were born in either: St. Vincent, Grey, Ontario, or Hamilton, Grey, Ontario.

1891

  • As of the Canada Census for 1891, the McCartney household has relocated to Hamilton, Ontario: geographically south of Toronto, between it and Niagara (See Sources: 1891 Census).

The next schedule for a general Census of Canada was the year 1901. However, no Provincial record for Joseph and Catherine McCartney are found for that year anyway in Canada.

1905

  • The birth of the ninth and last McCartney child, a daughter: Irene McCartney takes place in Manitoba, Canada.

1906

Sometime prior to the1905 birth of Irene, Joseph, Catherine and their children are resettled in MacDonald and Homewood, Manitoba, Canada (See Sources: 1906 Canada Census, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba)

For years, my assumption, in part based upon family recollection regarding the underlying incentive for the relocation from Ontario to Manitoba was as part of the larger Immigration strategy of the family. For that reason, I focused upon parameters specifically identifying McCartney Border Crossing activity from Manitoba into the United States at Port of Arrival: Neche, North Dakota. The previously cited Immigration record showed the Port of Arrival, as Neches. North Dakoka. However, there is an annoying wrinkle in my theory. I will discuss in full during 1914 Immigration – Border Crossing records

1911

  • The final Canadian Census capturing the McCartney’s, takes place in 1911 Canada Census for: MacDonald, Manitoba, Canada. Recorded members of the household were:
  • Joseph McCartney – Head, 54
  • Catherine McCartney – Wife, 42
  • Herbert McCartney – son, 21
  • Norman McCartney – son, 18
  • James McCartney – son, 17
  • Verna McCartney – daughter, 14

Earlier that same year, daughter: Irene McCartney dies at age 6

Likewise absent from the household in 1911 are adult children: Joseph Burton McCartney, Eva Annabel McCartney, and Gertrude McCartney. While I do not have individual US/Canada Immigration or Border Crossing record information on these three adult children, at least two of them: Joseph Burton and James Price are subsequently identified along with the family, as residing in Tulare County, California

1914 Transcript

  • Immigration – U.S. Canadian Border Crossing records: Vermont, St. Albans Canadian Border Crossings 1895–1954

Last permanent address (Canada) Homewood, Manitoba

  • Name and address of nearest family member living in country alien is for: Brother: George McCartney, Meaford, Ontario, Canada
  • McCartney individual family members identified on Manifest record:
  • Joseph McCartney, age 60
  • Catherine Borden, age 52
  • Herbert Henry, age 24
  • Norman Everitt, age 23
  • James Price, age 21
  • Verna Laura, age 18

This record clearly identifies the entire family at the U.S. Canada International Border, (minus Eva Annabel. Lillian May, and Gertrude McCartney) with declared intention of Immigration, and an identified destination of Fresno, California and to the household of Joseph Burton McCartney.

The likely source and cause of confusion that the McCartney’s Immigrated via Manitoba with the Port of Arrival in Neches, North Dakota is due to how the document of application is shown, as three separate sheets, when in reality it is one ‘packet’. While page 3 does indicate Port of Arrival as Neches, North Dakota it is clear that the ‘Event Place’ is Vermont, St. Albans Canadian Border Crossing. Event date: Roll 274, vol 329-380, Nov 1914

So after some ‘re’ reading of the record, except for Joseph Burton (who apparently Immigrated ahead of the others) and the three girls: Lillian, Gertrude, and Eva… the family does Immigrate together, into Vermont, St. Albans, all destined for Fresno together.

1920

*United States Federal Census for Tulare Ward 9, Tulare County, California will be the last Census citation identifying Joseph and Catherine. It also records as residing in the same household 1920:

  • Herbert McCartney, age 28 (son)
  • Blanche McCartney, age 16 (daughter in law)
  • James McCartney, age 23 (son)

Joseph is predominately recorded as living until 1935 when he too dies, in Tulare. To date, no Cemetery Index information has yielded identification pertaining to the place of burial, for either Joseph or Catherine.

US Find A Grave Index, BillionGraves, and Interment.Inc do not record matches for either of my great grandparents.
