Timeline and Residence

Forward Note:

  1. Due to incorrect transcription of various sources, one might find her maiden name spelled: Marckle, Merkle, Moerkle, Marvel, and Manville respectively.
  2. There is another woman who is frequently cross-referenced with this Sarah Ann Elizabeth Hallock (Markle), here after referred to mainly as: Sarah Ann.

Two differences

  • The woman not here profiled is rightfully identified as: Sarah Ann Elizabeth Markle. To my knowledge, there is not an immediate family connection, however, admittedly I have not spent time on unraveling one - assuming it even exists. (Example: http://hints.ancestry.com/tree/18708251/hints?hf=allhints&src=hn&fn... ) This is the recurrent 'hint'/'match':

New York City, Deaths, 1892-1902 Birth, Marriage & Death

  • Birth 1830
  • Death 16 Oct 1898 - New York, New York - Age: 68
  • Name Anna Merkle

New York, New York, Death Index, 1862-1948 Birth, Marriage & Death

  • Birth 1830
  • Death 16 Oct 1898 - Manhattan - Age: 68
  • Name Anna Merkle

The coincidence of name and matching birth/death years is striking.

  • My second great-grandmother is more appropriately identified as: Sarah Ann Elizabeth Hallock (born Markle). She lived most of her life as a ‘Hallock’. Also, the woman not here profiled apparently died in 1898 as well, but she was in New York state.

Is it possible that her 1898 year of death has been superimposed upon my second great grandmother? Sure. But I would find that dubious since there are so many family researchers who peg that as the year, but do not associate a place of death as being New York state. Also, we know that by 1900 her husband James De Groat Hallock was referring to himself as a Widower (See his profile: Sources: US Federal Census 1900) The last two actual time/date specific references to Sarah Ann occur in:

Everitt Allen Whitney Memoirs for December 1890 (Again please refer to James' profile Overview for exact reference). She is also recorded as being a witness at daughter Clara 's wedding to Everitt Allen Whitney on April 19th, 1891 Loyal, Wisconsin.

So at the very broadest, we know she died after Clara's 1891 wedding; and before Enumeration of the 1900 US Census

It would be easy to confuse the two Sarah Ann Elizabeth's were it not for married surname, and known place of death: New York (at least for one of them) and ‘assumed’ of either Bath, North Dakota or Carmen, Manitoba, Canada for the other. However, because differing sites and different researchers often identify women properly by their birth surname, in this case, it could pose a problem. The similarities of death-year and overlap of life time-lines could be confusing.

Also:

The woman profiled here had a daughter who was named: Sarah Markle (Hallock) Gamble

In most cases:

The easiest means of identifying the woman profiled here, is that from 1846 until her death, she was properly known and referred to as Sarah Ann Hallock.

However, she frequently either signed her name or otherwise provided for documentation alternate combinations of: S.A.E. Hallock, S.A. Hallock, Sarah A.E. Hallock and Sarah Ann E. Hallock. (See Sources)

Rarely (Usually on Census forms) is she simply referred to as: Sarah Hallock. She apparently was quite fond of her full name and represented it when able to do so. Which may have been influenced by the fact she had daughter's named: Sarah and Elizabeth. It may have been her way of remaining distinguished from others in the immediate family with shared given and middle names. However, one last note.... she was using combinations of her given and middle names upon the birth certificates of some of her children, so likely she was already inclined to do so before there might be confusion as to who was who.

The Markle name was apparently quite important to Sarah Ann, because every piece of documentation I have reviewed for her children (Birth, Marriage, and Death) – each one knows her maiden name, or it is provided by their representative (ie, on death certificate transcript information (See Sources, or individual profiles). So there was no question the Markle name had an enduring presence within this specific Hallock family for at least two generations. That’s impressive considering consistent knowledge for many maiden names is lost within a generation, if known at all. Not the case here.

Compared to her spouse, James D. Hallock, depressingly very little is known by me about Sarah Ann, other than the historical record as I presently know it. I know who she was in context to being a daughter, a sister, a wife, and mother, but I have yet to know who she was as an individual.

Because so much detail exists in James D. Hallock s profile (James De Groat Hallock ) I would request you visit his profile for better insight to Sarah Ann.

ALTON WHITNEY, HIS (James D Hallock) GRANDSON BELIEVED HE DIED IN EUGENE, OR, BUT A SEARCH
OF THE RECORDS DO NOT SUBSTANTIATE THAT. HE MADE HIS LIVING IN LATER YEARS BY SELLING BOOKS, MAINLY OF A SENSATIONAL NATURE (FOR THE TIMES ). HIS WIFE, SARAH MARKLE IS NOT BURIED IN GREENWOOD CEMETERY @ CARMEN , MAN. AS REPORTED IN THE ORIGINAL COOK GENEALOGY BOOK.

So, while the claim here for place of burial is being contested as wrong, the author offers no alternate or optional information.
