Cecilia Ann "Ann" Gandovin (aka Godwin/Gaudwin) was born about 1698 in Henrico County, English Colony of Virginia, on her family's plantation near the French Huguenot settlement of Manakin Towne, which had been founded in 1700-1701 by the arrival of 5 ships laden with French Huguenot (Protestant) refugees, who had fled their homeland due to the increasing religious persecution sponsored by France's Roman Catholic King Louis XIV. Originally in England, they were offered a settlement in England's royal colony of Virginia by its Protestant monarch, King William III (of Orange). The Gandovin family had already left Europe for Virginia in about 1685 and Ann's parents maintained close ties with the French immigrants in what later became Goochland County (in 1728) and today is in Powhatan County, Virginia, USA (in 1777).
Ann's parents were Isaac Gandovin, b: about 1645 in Nantes, Loire Atlantique, France, and his wife, Mary Ann (Pleasant) Gandovin.
In about 1714, at 16 years old, Ann Gandovin / Godwin married Mathieu Agee ("Matthew Age"), born around 1670 in Nantes, Loire-Atlantique, France.[4] He was also a French Huguenot emigrant and, like Ann, from a noble family in the Nantes area who had lost their titles and lands under King Louis XIV due to their Protestant faith. Although no official record has survived, it is widely agreed that Mathieu Agee arrived on one of the 5 ships of French Huguenot refugees, sent by England's King William III to Virginia in 1700-1701. He was naturalized as an English subject with the other French Huguenots of Manakin Towne in 1705 and a local register in about 1714 lists him as married (to "Ann") but without children as yet.[5]
The couple settled on 221 acres in the “Upper part of the last 5,000 acres set aside for the French Refugees," at a place now called "Five Forks" on State Route 711, Powhatan County, Virginia. They had 4 children:[6]

- Judith Agee, born about 1721 in King Wm. Parish, Henrico, VA
- Isaac born about 1723 in King Wm. Parish, Henrico, VA
- James born in January 1725 in King Wm. Parish, Henrico, VA
On July 25, 1755, "Matthew Age" and his wife sold their land in what was then Goochland (now Powhatan) County, and moved about 60 miles west of Manakin to Buckingham County, Virginia. They had patented 400 acres there on "Troublesome Creek," in 1749 and added another 1,280 acres near Hubbard's Creek, in 1756. In 1761 they deeded 400 acres of this land to their "beloved son James." It is the last property record they filed. Vital records for Buckingham County were destroyed by fire in 1868 so no exact death dates are known but it can be assumed that they died on their plantation near today's Dillwyn, Buckingham, Virginia, in the 1760s.
