Biography

Charity Hodges was born on 05 April 1682 in Taunton, Plymouth Colony, British America [1] [2] [3] [4] and her parents were Esther (Gallup) and Henry Hodges.

She was a member of the Newent Congregational Church in Lisbon, New London County, Connecticut Colony. [5]

She first married on 25 March 1703 in Taunton, Bristol County, Massachusetts Bay Colony to Elkanah Leonard and they had ten children born in Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [2] [4][6] [7]

She married secondly on 17 Dec 1722 in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut Colony to Captain Jabez Perkins of Norwich and they had one child Charity Perkins, born in 1724 Norwich. [2] [8][9] [10]

In 1725 Charity Perkins was admitted to the Newent Congregational Church in Lisbon, New London County, Connecticut Colony.

Her husband Jabez Perkins died in 1742 and she eventually moved back to Massachusetts.

She died on 29 Feb 1759 in Middleboro, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America [2] [11] and was buried at the Thompson Hill Cemetery in Lakeville, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. [11]

Research Notes

The source by Hodges [2] gives the death date for Charity as 29 February 1739. The death date on Charity's headstone (as best I can read the photograph) 29 February 1759 - a birth date on the headstone of April 1685 = 73 years. This closely coincides with the age at death on the headstone of 74 years. There are a few reasons why there are some discrepancies in the death date and death age for Charity ...

Memories might have been weak for the birth date and age for Charity. The dual dating for the conversion to the Gregorian calendar (1752 for Britain) might have confused the dating. Reading the headstone inscription might have introduced some errors. The date of death is given as 29 February, however, both 1639 and 1659 were not leap years.
