Powhatan-Vann- Jernigan Connection

My novel Swimming with Serpents was inspired by the discovery of my Native American heritage through this Jernigan line. After writing Swimming with Serpents, I followed the survivors of Horseshoe Bend into the First Seminole War in In Pursuit, the second in my Serpents Series Family Saga. To confirm the Native American genealogy in the dedication of Swimming with Serpents, I took a Tribal DNA (Tribaldna.com) test that confirmed the Native American genealogy, but it was more specific than that. It was Mayan/Mexican/Native American confirming what a lot of Georgia anthropologists are speculating about what happened to many Mayans in the Mayan exodus of 700-900 AD. To order a signed copy of Swimming with Serpents, send a check for $29 (book $26, shipping and handling $3).

The sequel, In Pursuit, is also available for $20. Please include your name, address and email.

Powhatan Vann-Jernigan connection

My thanks to Don Greene for his kind email response to my inquiry about this genealogy and for the website Noel Schutz (http://www.shawnee-traditions.com/ or noelschutz@yahoo.com) has created.

Don Greene (shawneeporf1@skybest.com)

has written a book available now: Shawnee Heritage: Shawnee Genealogy and Family History. (http://www.lulu.com/content2341611)

Thanks to Tammie my internet friend and cousin who tipped me off to Mr. Greene and his work, and my fascinating family connection. As I have said many times...I just love finding cousins and how we "fit" into history. Also check out: http://kyusa.addr.com/Cherokee/index.html Sharman

(half sister of Pocahontas) "Library of the Maryland Historical Society, an item of three lines covering eleven years. During the period covered by the fragment, matters became so bad between the Whites and the Indians that Opechancanough , Chief of the Powhatans, was induced to agree upon a line being established which neither White nor Indian, excepting truce bearers, should cross under penalty of being shot on sight. To insure strict obedience to the compact, a law was passed at Jamestown imposing a heavy penalty on any people crossing the line without a special permit from the Commissioners Council and the General Court. This accounts for the item alluded to, which is given verbatim. It reads: "Note: Dec. 17th, 1641 -- Thomas Rolfe petitions the governor to let him see Opechankeno to whom he is allied, and Cleopatra, his mother's sister."

Note: The record of the General Court was evidently intended to be a verbatim copy though they differ in phraseology and spelling: Note: "Dec. 17th, 1641 -- Thomas Rolph petitions Gov. to let him go see Opechanko, to whom he is allied, and Cleopatre, his mother's sister." Note: Thomas Rolfe was the son of John Rolfe and Pocahontas. Source: http://www.kentuckykinfolkorganization.com/descendantofSamuelBurks.html

It reads: "Note:

Dec.
