At first Donald settled on his father’s estate, and married Mary, daughter of Rory McNeil (James), of Big Beach. He had a large family. About forty years ago, he moved with them to Victoria Mines and was ferry man between Low Point and North Sydney for many years. One of his sons, Donald (Red), married a daughter of Charles McInnis (Big), and lived at Goose Pond for some years. He and his family live in one of the mining districts.

John McKinnon. “An Griasaich,” and his descendants.
John McKinnon, shoemaker, was a son of Neil McKinnon, Castle Bay, Barra. He was married to Jessie McDonald, niece of Rev. Angus McDonald, who was Parish Priest of Barra before he was taken to Rome to become a Professor in the College of the Propaganda.

John McKinnon and his wife and infant son, John, came to Cape Breton in 1817, and settled on the land occupied, until lately, by John Bryden, Benacadie. After coming to Benacadie they were blessed with a family as follows: — Maggie, Mary, Neil, Katie, Ann, and Angus.

Donald married a daughter of Charles McInnis (Big).
