The Blackbeard family lived in Posno Street, Beaconsfield, Cape Colony. Charles Alexander Blackbeard was a member of the Kimberley Club. He took a prominent interest in the Municipal affairs of Beaconsfield. He was a Justice of the Peace and Mayor of Beaconsfield seven times. He was a successful digger at New Rush and Du Toitspan. He was Chairman of the Local Public School and the local branch of the South African League. He was Chairman of the Kroonstad Coal and Estate Company and Director of the Griqualand West Diamond Mine Company. He served as a Trooper in the Diamond Field's Horse in the War of 1877-1878. He became Captain and Adjutant in the Beaconsfield Town Guard during the Siege in the South African War. He was mentioned in Colonel Kekewich's despatches. Medals issued to C.A. Blackbeard - South African 1877-79 with 1878 clasp, Queen's South African 1899-1902 with Defence of Kimberley clasp and Mayor of Kimberley's Star 1899-1900.
