Robert Campbell came to the US between 1730 and 1740 and landed in Philadelphia. After living near Landcaster, Pennsylvania, for a short time, moved west and then down the Great Wagon Road to Fort Defiance. This is north of Staunton by 4 miles. Robert and Margaret had three sons and a daughter.

Robert moved from fort Defiance in 1740, moved in 1751 to North River-Long glade next to his son Charles.

The relationship of the three sons, John, Charles, and Hugh, to Robert has been established by Y-DNA testing. DNA testing has proven that this North River Campbell family is not related to the D/M South river Line.
