9/6/2000 Per a newspaper clipping sent to me by a descendant, Mrs. Judy Newton on August 19, 2000: "Mr. Charlie Campbell died at his home near Cedar Creek the 14th inst. (no month or year date is listed, nor is the name of the newspaper), of black jaundice. He was sick just thirteen hours. He leaves a wife and two sisters, Mrs. Jas. Faris and Mrs. Allen Calloway, and six children, Wash, Wiley, Sam, Ben, Clarence and Sallie. Mr. Campbell was a highly respected citizen, and his death is an irreparable loss to the community. He was laid to rest in the Cedar Creek cemetery on the same day. The funeral was attended by a large crowd of sorrowing friends and relatives. We know it is indeed hard to give him up, for his place can never be filled. The family have the sincere sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. 'Tis hard to break the tender cord When love has bound the heart, 'Tis so hard to speak the tender words, We must forever part. But dearest loved one we lay thee In thy peaceful grave; with thy love embrace, But thy love will be cherished Till we see thy Heavenly face. Big Elk"
Judy states that the name "Sam" should have read "Wilce." The others are correct. She doesn't know the given name of the sister: Mrs. Jas. Faris (Farris?), but states that Mrs. Allen Calloway's given name was Elizabeth Flora "Bettie" Campbell. (Another descendant, Sharla Liske, lists her as Flora Elizabeth "Bettie" Campbell.)
Judy Newton's address: 222 East Jolly, Palestine, TX 75801 (She doesn't have a phone.) JPF-9/7/00
Per phone call from Judy Newton: A death record was found in the Palestine courthouse and it stated that Charlie Campbell died at home on Dec. 14, 1904 at 5 A.M. of Black Jaundice. He was a white male and was 47 years old. His home was 7 mi. southwest of Palestine, Anderson Co., TX. JPF-9/30/2000 [Chas[1].C.CampbellFamily.FTW]
