[wedding announcement:]

RANSOM - LENNOX.

In the apartments of Mrs. James T. Lennox of 40 East Twenty-fifth Street, her daughter, Miss Mary Edson Lennox, was married yesterday to Dr. Charles Cook Ransom, physician in charge of the Baths at Richfield Springs. The knot was tied at noon by the Rev. Dr. Robert Granger of Richfield Springs. The bride wore a gown of embroidered white silk mull, draped over white satin and caught with small sprays of orange blossoms. The jewel ornaments consisted of a necklace of pearls and diamonds, with a pearl pendant. A tulle veil and a large bunch of orange blossoms finished the costume. There were no ushers nor best man.

Little Miss Constance Edson, niece of the bride, acted as maid of honor, and Henry K. McHarg, and Elie Charlier Edson, son of Dr. Tracy Edson, were the ushers. The parlors were decorated with Spring flowers arranged by Thorley.

Diseases of the Skin, a book by Charles Cook Ransom, "Assistant Dermatologist, Vanderbilt Clinic, New York" - Lea Bros., 1893, 191 pages, originally retail priced $1.00 - downloaded 2010 from books.google.com

The book's preface is a half-page message to students, signed by the author, who gives his address as, "125 W. 48th St., New York."

The author describes a wide range of skin diseases, their, causes, diagnosis, prognosis, treatments, etc. There are numerous black and white illustrations (woodcuts or wood engravings), which depict diseased skin of various kinds, instruments used in treatments, anatomical drawings of various kinds, views through microscopes, etc. Among the most gruesome images are depictions of Elephantiasis — Fig. 11 depicts an adolescent male afflicted with "Elephantiasis Scroti," and Fig. 12 depicts "Elephantiasis of the Foot and Leg." On page 102, Fig. 16 depicts "The Russian 'Dog-Faced Man."

As a resident of New York, Dr. Ransom may have seen comparable figures displayed at P.T. Barnum's American Museum in New York City.

There are several other publications credited to Dr. Ransom. Another that is available (2010) online is the article "The treatment of gout by natural mineral waters," 1897, pp 214-222, via www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2526837/....

A periodical in Richfield Springs, NY, was The Richfield Springs Daily. Page one of the issue for Friday, July 7, 1899, had six columns of text, including this report:

      "THE BATHING ESTABLISHMENT
                         __________

The bathing establishment, complete as is to every particular, is one of the most interesting features of Richfield to the summer population, and only expressions of surprise and admiration are to be heard from those who have visited it. The bubbling spring in the rotunda always excites no moderate wonderment, the supply of water being practically exhaustless. The reading room which was opened for the convenience of the public for the first time last season, has many visitors, and its convenience is highly appreciated.

Dr. Charles Cook Ransom, of New York, is the physician in charge, while the general affairs of the establishment are under the management of Mr. Henry M. Ney, who for so many years was connected with the Spring House.

Miss Zimmermann has charge of the women's massage department, with about a score of employees.

Mrs. Emma Andrus has the supervision of the other departments, with about a score of employees."

An inquiry posted at "Jul - Sep 2004 Queries Chenango County, New York," to http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/chenango/queries/julsep04.htm

Paula Paul Thu Jul 29 18:12:03 2004 Looking for any information on the Jared Comstock RANSOM family. Wife-Ann Amanda COOK, Children-Charles Cook, Norman Kibby and Warren Green. He was a local preacher and lived on State Street in Oxford. Does State Street still exist? Since he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church (Oneida Conference and Wyoming Conference) are there cemeteries in the area that he might be buried in? He died July 5, 1882. Thanks Paula Paul

ROBERT [3] of Colchester undoubtedly led an industrious life and was largely engaged in the acquisition of wealth, though it would probably do him an injustice to say that he did not divide his time impartially between treasures of the heavenly and earthly sort, for his interest manifested in the affairs of the Colchester Society indicates that he did not overlook the spiritual concerns of the good people with whom his fortunes were cast.

His daily duties and exemplary life, as commemorated by local and family records, mark him as an interesting character. He and Alice reared a large family, seven boys and four girls, and all them, so far as the history of their careers has been preserved, seem to have achieved success in their varied lives, and their share of honors in public stations.

[Joshua Ransom's parentage on p. 83:]

No. 2. JOSHUA RANSOM (Robert1), b. about 1665, Sandwich, Mass.; m. 1st Mary Gifford, daughter of John and Elishua Gifford, at Sandwich, Feb. 21, 1686; d. Oct. 25, 1689; m. 2nd Susanna Garner at Plymouth, Mass., March 10, 1692; she died at Halifax, Mass., March 10, 1735; date and place of Joshua's death uncertain; he was living at the old homestead in Plympton, December 3d, 1713.

CHILDREN BY MARY GIFFORD.

9. 1. Robert (3), b. about 1687, at or near Wexford, R. I.; m. Alice Newton at North Kingston, R. I., 1707; d. at Colchester, Conn., Jan. 23, 1777.

10. 2. Mary, b. about 1688-9, at North Kingston, R. I.; m. Samuel Knight at Colchester, Conn., Nov. 29, 1716.,

CHILDREN BY SUSANNA GARNER.

11. 3. John, b. ■ -; m. Martha Ripley at Plympton, June 26, 1718; d. at Plympton, Mass., September, 1729.

12. 4. Sarah, b. at Plympton, Mass., — —; m. Francis Curtis, May 12, 1720.

13. 5. Joshua (2), b. ^; m. Mary Wright, Dec.

13, 1722. ( ?)

The record of Joshua's life and career is obscure and involved in much uncertainty. It is obvious from a close review of the Plymouth records that he was a man active in affairs, having numerous land deals, indicating that he was a general trader and property man. After his second marriage his relations to his children seem to have been mainly restricted to John, the son, by his wife, Susanna, and gave him the home at Plympton previous to his death. It seems quite likely that Robert and Mary, the children by Mary Gifford, remained in Rhode Island after their mother's death in their uncle's (Yelverton-Gifford) family, where they were reared.
