About Charles Crompton

12 Princes Terrace, Derby Rdm, Bootle. Known as Charlie. Occupation: Post office Engineer. Married on 30th April in St Thomas's Seaforth, Mary Rebecca Curphey, daughter of John and Sarah Curphey. Lived at 35 St Clair Terrace, Edinburgh. Joined Post Office Telegraph Department on 1 April 1885 and trained as a telegraph engineer. In 1894, appointed engineer for Oban; within 6 months there was a submarine cable breadown and he used W H Preeces's apparatus for "signalling without wires" to bridge from the mainland to the Isle of Mull - the first time wireless had been used to maintain a public service. Awarded OBE for war service. In 1921 , Superintending Engineer of South Wales and, in 1924 , similar position for West Scotland. Retired 30th Nov 1925 after 40 years service.
