About Robert Crompton
In 1870 Robert gave up his watchmaker and jewellers business in London Road to devote himself to literary and journalistic work connected to art and stage. An artist of no mean order, he wa also a poet and published a volume of his works dedicated, by permission, to Charles Dickens in 1866. He produced and acted in many plays at the old Theatre Royal and wrote many pantomimes for Liverpool theatres. He was shortlisted to be the first curator of the Walker Art Gallery and his failure to get the job was a major disappointment.
