About James Shaw Crompton
Watercolour artist. Update: 10th August 2009: See picture by James Shaw Crompton - Women at a Courtyard Balcony. This was sold at auction on 17th Oct 2001 at Sotheby's London, Lot 190 in The Travel Sale: Mediterranean and Middle East. Apparently some 25 previous items have been sold at auction according to the archive of fine art sales worldwide.
Married his Cousin Martha Alice Crompton (b 14 Nov 1851 (daughter of John Crompton and Ann Heatherley) known as Mattie. James died 22 July 1916 at 1 England Lane, Haverstock HIll, London. Commercial carree with Asburner & Son, wine importer, Liverpoo. Always artistically inclined, he achieved distinction with his watercolours of Eastern scenes and figures.He visited Eygpt in 1895. IN 1896 he was admitted to Membership of the Royal British and Colonial Art Society and the Royal Drawing Society. In 1881 he went to London and devoted himself to art. One of his pictures, "The Accusation" now hangs in the Walker Art Gallery. Newnes Art Bible, published in 1896, was partly illustrated by James. Another of his pictures was purchased by His Serne Highness Count Gleiche, Prince Hohenloe, himself an artist. He illustrated many novels, chiefly those of G R Crockett, and his black and white work ws a familar feature in London magazines for many years.
He is buried in Highgate Cemetery , grave no 40329, Square 116.
