About Charles William Fry

Charles William Fry was born 1 May 1842 in Orange County, Virginia. He was the fourth son of Philip Slaughter Fry and Permelia Anderson. He and his six brothers grew up in Orange County where their father served as the Clerk of the Court.The Fry boys attended Locust Dale Academy in Orange Court House, Virginia, and at least some pursued higher education opportunities.Charles William Fry, generally known to family and friends as "Willie", graduated from Locust Dale Academy in 1859.Afterward, he taught school in Chicot county Arkansas for about eighteen months.During the Civil War he served as confederate captain of a Virginia Light Artillery (Orange Artillery) Company and took part in a number of battles in Virginia. He kept a record of ordinance expenditures, officer's mess accounts, poetry, and engineering computations.Fry's Battery, Orange county Virginia Artillery, played a role in the fighting around Gettysburg Pennsylvania. On July 3rd 1863 all its guns were on Seminary Ridge near the Railroad cut and took part in the cannonade preceding Longstreet's assault.Following the Civil War Willie Fry returned to Chicot county Arkansas where he was employed by the planters in the construction of levees to protect them from the overflow of the Mississippi River.He married Frances Walker Davies, daughter of Anthony and Mildred (Gaines) Davies, in 1867. Willie Fry and Fannie Davies were the parents of two children, Frances Davies Fry born in 1868, and William Reuben Fry born 18 September 1870. Sadly Fannie Fry died a few weeks after the birth of her son, on the 5th of October 1870. Son and daughter were raised by his brother-in-law, Walter Davies, and their grandmother, Mildred (Gaines) Davies.Charles William Fry never remarried. In 1878, he became involved in the Hot Springs bathing, heath, and tourist industry. He was superintendent of Hot Springs Bath House Association and eventually managed two of the largest Hot Springs establishments, the Majestic Hotel Baths and the Arlington Hotel Baths.He died on the 6th of September 1922, at the age of eighty years. He is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Hot Springs Arkansas.
