After Serving Through the Civil War He Returned to Indian Territory and Began Helping Others __________

An interesting bit of history in the life of Charles Hobart Heald, who died at Healdton, January 30, is related by a granddaughter, Mrs. Shirley Holman of this city. Mr. Heald was a pioneer citizen of southern Oklahoma and his progressive and indomitable spirit did much to develop this part of the country. Herewith is published something of his life as written by Mrs. Holman:

"Charles Hobart Heald was born March 17, 1843 at Skullyville, Indian Territory. He married Eliza Jane Guy, who was part Chickasaw Indian at Elm Grove, Indian Territory, April 10, 1861. Children from this union were Mrs. W. R. Ingram, who now lives at Oklahoma City, Mrs. Janie Hardy, deceased, first wife of Dr. Walter Hardy, Mrs. Henry Davis, Ardmore, Will and Ben Heald of Healdton.

"Mr. Heald, for many years lived at old Mill Creek. His wife died there November 26, 1887 and is buried in the lonely cemetery on the banks of Mill creek.

"In 1888 Mr. Heald settled at Healdton and lived in the same house 24 years. He married Fanny Nicholas, June 18, 1893. Their living children being Mrs. Clay Shroder, Mrs. Cecil Ratcliffe and Miss Hazel Heald, all of Healdton.

"Mr. Heald was a well educated man, being educated at Boston, Mass. When he was 18 years old he passed his examination entitling him to enter West Point. However the Civil war beginning at that time he enlisted and served in the Confederate Army, during the four years of war.

"His children had a very pretty custom of celebrating his birthday. Even though months passed without some of the children coming home, he knew that he might expect them all to spend March 17 with him. Christmas too meant home coming. The roomy old farm house with its immense fire place was usually the gathering place for a happy crowd of children and grand children.

"Mr. Heald was a member of the Healdton Masonic Lodge No. 23 for 29 years and was past master and secretary emeritus at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Ardmore chapter No. 11, R. A. M.

"Charles D. Carter, congressman, is a nephew. Mr. Heald possessed many old relics from his eastern relatives. Jewelry, Silver plates, pictures, china, quilts etc. One especially prized is an old Bible published in 1846. It contains 1,200 pages and also has the Apocrypha. On the memorandum pages is the history of five generations of the Heald family.

"Dr. Hardy paid a loving tribute to Mr. Heald at the time of his death coming out in his plane flying low and dropping white flowers in the yard.

"Mr. Heald will long be remembered for his many, many charitable acts, thinking always of others, arranging for their comforts and forgetting self. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and Dr. C. C. Weith, pastor of the Ardmore church went out in the plane with Dr. Hardy and conducted the funeral services.

"Deceased left a wife, seven children, 25 grand-children, and 12 great grand-children to mourn his death." Obituary provided by findagrave member #48159371
