About Charles Peter Lamas

Posted by Angela Krebs 06/30/2008. Source - excerpt taken from a photo-copied article found in a Lamas family photo box - publication/date/authenticity unknown, however, content is consistent with family hearsay:

"Charles Peter Lamas

A remarkable and constructive career closed yesterday when Charles Lamas of Savannah died on the first day of a visit to his native Greece. Mr. Lamas had gone abroad in the hope that a visit to his homeland would be of benefit to his health. The hope was futile, and Mr. Lamas passed away in the land from which he set forth a half century ago for the United States.

Mr. Lamas found America the country of opportunity, the field of his productive activity having been centered in Savannah. Here Mr. Lamas and his family associates prospered through the exercise of the chance to work in the freedom and security that this country affords to everyone who is willing. While Mr. Lamas prospered in the material sense, he enjoyed, too, a wealth of intangible resources that endeared him to his family, his church, and placed him in the forefront of community efforts.

Throughout the years that Mr. Lamas was a citizen of Savannah his every effort was constructive. Admired for his ability and his quiet, pleasing personality, he gave of his time and substance in the highest lay offices of the Greek Orthodox Church and in the Order of the Ahepa. He reared a fine family and never fully recovered from the break in the family circle when his wife died some monhths ago. His was a full, well-rounded life, with virtues, that all well might emulate."
