About Charles Seth Lane, III

CHARLES SETH LANE III, prominent Frederick business man and brother of former Governor William Preston Lane, Jr., of Hagerstown, died at Frederick Memorial Hospital Saturday evening following a short illness, aged 60 years.

Mr. Lane was taken ill at his residence, 114 West Church street Friday and removed to the hospital. While not in robust health for some years his death nevertheless was unexpected.

Possessed of a pleasant and kindly disposition, Mr. Lane was actively identified with civic affairs of Frederick city and county. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal church where he was a vestryman. He was a former member of the Frederick County Board of Education and the Frederick County Welfare Board and served as a committeeman on many local charity drives.

He was a veteran of WWI and attended Princeton University.

An enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, Mr. Lane was a member of Woodmont Rod and Gun Club, was past president of the Frederick County Fish and Game Protective Association Inc., and a charter member of the Fishing Creek Rod and Gun Club. He was secretary-treasurer of Dietrich and Gambrill, Inc., local grain dealers, and a member of the board of directors of the Frederick Hotel Company.

A son of the late William Preston and Virginia Cartwright Lane of Washington County. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Susan Gambrill Lane; four daughters, Mrs. J. Malcolm McCardell, Mrs. A. Atlee Radcliffe, both of Frederick; Miss Caroline Rogers Lane and Miss Antoinette Gambrill Lane, both at home. Three brothers, J. Clarence Lane, New Castle, De.; William Preston Lane, Jr, Hagerstown; S. Maddox Lane, Radford, Va.; sister, Mrs. James H. Gambrill III, Frederick; and four grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held at All Saints Episcopal church; interment was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery; M.R. Etchison and Son were the funeral directors.
