Charles was born roughly around 1839 in Cloughaneely, Bedlam, Tullaghobegly Parish in the barony of Kilmacrenan in the County of Donegal, Ireland.
He travelled out with his brother Edward from Ireland to Australia at age 20 years, aboard the Sapphire in 1859 and he met his wife, Anne Dugan/Duggan/Doogan on the ship. They married in Maitland in 1863.
On the immigrant passenger list, Edward and Charles are listed with occupations as Labourers. Neither could read or write. It is possible that Edward and Charles came out with several of their cousins and met up with two of their sisters later on.
