About Charles Shelley Oakes
Charles Shelley Oakes was born in 1838 and married Emma Jane Manton in 1861. Emma was the daughter of Rev. John Allen Manton who was the minister of the penal settlement. He was also the founder of "Horton College", Ross, Tasmania a boarding schol for "The sons of Gentlemen" and based on the English system. He was also the founder and first president of Newington College, Parramatta on his return to Sydney. Charles Shelley Oakes was a pastoralist at "Mayfield" Parramatta and later at "Oak Park" Crookwell which he inherited from his father.
