About Charles Russell "Russ" Orvis
CHARLES "RUSS" RUSSELL ORVIS ~
C. R. was a machinst in Pampa, Texas when he retired.
When he was a young man he hauled ice & coal using a team of 3 mules. He helped lay Highway 67, just N of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Parts of the old Highway are still visible.
While he was married to his first wife, Marie, he was over at his father's house, across the field, when a tornado came through. He tried to make it home through a grove of trees but the wind was too strong, so he grabbed a tree, wrapping arms & legs around it & hung on for dear life. When he got home everything was ok. Marie was pregnate at the time with Wendell Aldridge Orvis. He went back later to find the tree he had held onto & was able to move it back & forth with little effort. ~ Jr. Ponder
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp., 3rd Regiment from 1920 until 1922.
He was a gentle, kind, loving man who is often thought of & missed.
