Charles Dyer Smith (chr. 27 Feb 1773 - d. after June 1801), the seventh child born to CS and BS and perhaps the most unfortunate, was baptised at All Hallow’s Church, Tottenham. Enrolled for a short time at Winchester, he left in 1788 for unspecified reasons; CS was to lament that she never had enough money to enrol him at Oxford and spare him the dangers of a military life. She first describes him as a grown man, waiting idly at one for the trustees to provide him with enough money to join the army. By Sept 1795 Charles had returned to active duty as a lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Battalionunder General Thomas Trigge in Gibraltar. In 1798 he served as lieutenant of invalids at Berwick near his father in Hamilton, Scotland. His oldest brother William, home from India, visited him; they put BS to great expense entertaining them and Charles’s military friends. In quieter times, Charles’s oldest sister Charlotte Mary visited him too. In Oct 1800 he became paymaster of the 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot. The position gave him a chance to salt Barbados where he tried to settle some debts on the plantations belonging to his grandfather’s estate. Charles wrote several letters to the earl of Egremont - including what was probably his last …..
