Charles arrived in Wellington 19 May 1841 on the LORD WILLIAM BENTINCK as a Single Male, aged 21.
The ship had left Gravesend on 8th Jan.1941, a journey of 131 days - taking about 3 weeks longer than the 'Catherine Stewart Forbes' which arrived the following month carrying his future wife Sarah Peck, then aged 8 years. (He was 12 years older than Sarah)
On board were 242 passengers and, of PARTICULAR INTEREST - one of the crew was Henry Bentley who deserted with 5 others when it docked at Wellington. They helped build the Hutt Rd before being caught and sent back to work on board a ship. (It is said they were happy to be let off lightly AND get paid for it).
Henry was a founder of Masterton in 1854.
Charles was 28 when he married Sarah in Wellington 1849, she was 16.
They were farmers in Halcombe.
They had 8 children, the 5th one, Frances married Samuel Peck snr.
Sarah died 17 Oct 1907 in Ohingaiti aged 74 .
