Charles Wheatley Mathews, son of Lorenzo Mathews and Sophie Susanna Maartens, was born at Lichtenburg on the 16 March 1897. He was educated at Lichtenburg High School and Kingswood College, Grahamstown and graduated at Rhodes University, Grahamstown. While he was at Rhodes he obtained First Team colours in Tennis and Rugby and represented Eastern Province at rugby.
He married Mabel Maud de Wet at Lichtenburg in 1922 and they had 2 girls and a boy.
In 1925 he moved from Lichtenburg to Warmbaths where he acquired a legal practice and worked until his retirement in 1969.
During the Second World War, he acted as Defence Liaison Officer for the district and later as Chairman of the Defence Demobilisation Committee. His hobbies are fishing, horticulture and tennis. He was a founder member and past President of the North Central Tennis Union.
