It was basically the only year that I kept a diary as a youngster, mainly to record sporting events and especially rugby. I made the following entry on 16 May 1959. “In the morning, I heard that Ouma was so sick”. “She died at 5 to 5. The earth has really lost a Christian.” On Monday 18 May, we attended the funeral at Lichtenburg. “It was said that a wonderful person had died. The best part was when the farm workers started singing and I couldn’t help the tears coming down. Oupa took it wonderfully”. “I have been invited to spend the July holidays at the farm”.

I unfortunately do not have any data regarding Ouma’s birth date but will keep looking amongst my Mom’s documents. According to her death notice she was 86 years and 9 months when she died which means she was born August 1872?. She was married in community of property
