Charles du Plessis (1946 - 2008)
Brief overview:
Charles (62), farmer and chairperson of the farmers' union Agri-Lowveld was shot in the stomach when his farm in Sterkspruit was invaded on 26th July 2008. He and his wife Marietjie had just arrived home after their anniversary dinner. He was taken to hospital, connected to life support in ICU, but his condition deteriorated dramatically, and life support was switch off, and passed on 28th July. Charles was involved in border patrols in the farming area of Waterpoort in search of Zimbabwean illegal immigrants stealing and attacking farms.
The Du Plessis's two Mitsubishi vehicles, a Pajero and a Colt bakkie, were used in the robbery. The vehicles were discovered the next day near Malelane in the Onderberg where it was hidden in bushes along the N4. Supt. Gerrie Agenbag, commander of the Nelspruit detective branch, said they were still following several clues, but that no suspects had been arrested.
