About Charlotte A. Cobb
Charlotte A. Campbell was born in June of 1793 in Person County, North Carolina. She was the youngest child of John and Lucy Campbell. She grew up with three older sisters and one half-sister in the household. John Campbell was, to all appearances, a fairly wealthy and successful man, and he represented Person County in the North Carolina state senate for the years 1796-1799. Thus, Charlotte grew up in relative privilege. In about 1803, Charlotte, her parents and her sister Arabella moved to Abbeville District, South Carolina. Charlotte's mother Lucy died a few years later, in about 1807. By that time Charlotte's sister, Arabella, was married to Thomas Pleasant Martin, the son of Charles Martin and Martha "Pattey" Moon.
Thomas Pleasant Martin had a nephew named James Cobb. James was the son of Martha "Patsy" Martin and James Cobb, Jr. He was orphaned in 1801, and he had come to Abbeville District from Edgefield District in about 1806. James and Charlotte met at some point, and they were married in about 1809 when James was about twenty-three, and Charlotte was about sixteen. Given her father's wealth, Charlotte would have been a desirable catch.
Husband James died intestate 1835, without a will - and in heavy debt with many lawsuits against him. Left Charlotte with 7 minor children (they had 11 altogether). Sometime after 1860, Charlotte and her granddaughter [daughter of Arabella] - (who had gone to live w/grandmother when mother died 1852 (Starrville, Texas).
Charlotte died (after a brief illness at son Henry's home in Tyler, TX) on Jan. 24 1885 in Texas. Henry was editor of Hartwell Sun and wrote her obituary.
Buried in Starville Cemetery, 13940 Fm 757, Winona Smith, Texas, USA. Other relatives buried nearby.
