About Charlotte Joy
Charlotte Austin and her husband David Joy worked for the emancipation of the slaves. When David Joy died in 1875, Fredrick Douglas sent his wife a condolence letter reading.
"happiness to see much of our departed friend the reproach of his noble life and his benevolent works have reached me from many quarters. Perish me threw, in the nature of my long enslaved but now emancipate people, whose cause he made his own-remembering those who were in bonds has found with them and in my own name, to bring one laurel to the tomb of this man and noble benefactor.
Fredrick Douglas"
The letter can be found the the Joy Family Letters in the LInk below in the Nantucket Archives.
