Brief overview:

Charlotte (68), and husband Jacobus “Kobus” Petrus Van Tonder (78), of farm Merino, Vrede, Free State, were murdered on 30th May 2006. Jacobus was found dead in his bakkie (pick-up truck) by a shepherd at 17h00 on 30th May 2006. Police found the body of Charlotte in the kitchen of the farm. Two men - aged 20 and 24 - were arrested in connection with the murders, Free State police said. Superintendent Motarafi Ntepe said the men were arrested in the Zamani township at Memel. Jacobus's body and the vehicle had been abandoned in the veld in a remote part of the district. The exact cause of their deaths was unknown. The suspects were expected to appear in the Vrede magistrate's court. It was alleged that one of the men had worked on the farm before.
