William Abraham Hicks Was a Cherokee man

Uncertain parents

The woman called "Na-ye-hi Conrad" is believed by some to be the mother of Chiefs Charles Renatus Hicks, William Hicks, and their sisters Sarah and Elizabeth. and the Cherokee wife of white trader Nathan Hicks. Little is known about her and her family is speculative based on a statement in the Moravian diaries that says, "the very sick Gunrod left his own family to live with Charles Renatus Hicks a very close relative." Researcher James Hicks interprets this to mean that Charles Hicks was Gunrod's nephew, and that "Na-ye-hi" was his (Gunrod's) sister. Emmet Starr stated that Nathan Hicks' wife was "a full-blood woman of the Wolf clan," [1] which would mean she was not the daughter of a white trader.

Biography

William Hicks was born about 1769 in the Cherokee Nation. He was the son of a white man, Nathan Hicks, and his Cherokee wife.

NOTE: William's father was not the Nathaniel Hicks, b 1743, son of Robert, who was too young to have fathered Nanyehi's children.

Emmet Starr incorrectly listed Nancy Broom as William's mother, but the Moravian journals are clear that Nancy Broom was the wife of William's brother, Charles Renatus Hicks. It's possible that the mother of William and Charles was a sister of Gunrod Conrad. [2] William was the father of at least sixteen children. He had a son, George, by Lydia Halfbreed; with his wife Sallie Foreman he had fifteen children, Eli, Jay, [3] William Jr., Ruth [4] , Carrington, [5] Peggy (Margaret), [6] Abijah, [7] Ella, [8] Susannah, [9] Anna, [10] Joseph, [11] Charles, John, [12] Sarah, [13] and Nancy. [14] [15] He was Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation in 1827-28 following the sudden death of his brother, Chief Charles Renatus Hicks. [16] In 1832 William separated from Sallie and in 1833 he signed up to emigrate to Indian Territory on his own. [17] The remainder of his life (and no doubt Sallie's) was very troubled. [18] In March of 1834 William had a stroke. According to the Moravians he was once again home with his family, but had turned against the missionaries and was planning to emigrate as soon as his health improved. [19] William and his family appear on the 1835 Cherokee Census living on Oothcaloga Creek in what is now north Georgia. [20] Wiliam died in March, 1837, [21] and Sallie soon emigrated to Indian Territory. [22]
