"Tuscarora Chief,
Once Football Star,
Dies at 73
TUSCARORA RESERVATION,
Apr. 17-William Mt. Pleasant,
73, Indian Chief here for 24 years,
died last night at his home in Mt.
Hope Rd. He had been ill
for several months.
Born on the Reservaton, he
lived his entire life here.
He was the first Tuscaroran
to attend the Carlisle
Indian School. His brother,
the late Frank Mt. Pleasant,
also attended Carlisle and
was quarterback of the foot-
ball team which started the
famed Jim Thorpe.
Chief Mt. Pleasant was
graduated from Dickenson
College, where he served as
Captain of the football team.
In 1930 he was elected chief
and also served as secretary
of the People's Council and
a similar position on the Chiefs
Council on the Reservation.
He was the son of a famous
Indian educator and religious
leader, the late Rev. Frank
Pierce Mt. Pleasant and his
mother was Minnie
W.(Garlow)Mt. Pleasant.
Chief Mt. Pleasant was a leader
in Indian opposition to the
Wheeler-Harrison bill for
the reorganization of Indian
Reservations in the State.
Surviving the Chief are his wife.
Mrs. Phoebe Mt. Pleasant(whom he married in 1907);
two brothers, Wendell and Carl Mt.
Pleasant, Syracuse, and two sisters,
Mrs. Nina Guest. Jersey City, and
Mrs. Andrew Printup, Tuscarora
Reservation. Several nieces and
nephews also, survive."
