On Tuesday, 29 July 1980, PO3, Christian John Belgum, 22 years old, was one of two Sailors killed when the USS Midway collided with the Panamanian merchant ship Cactus, 450 miles southwest of Subic Bay in the Philippines, (South China Sea). Christian John Belgum worked in the LOX workcenter in A divison located in the hanger bay. PO3 Belgum is represented on the Remembrance Rug by symbol #6464. He was born on Tuesday, 11 February 1958 and was the son of Gerhard Lee Belgum and Olga Justine (Roe Tande) Belgum. The other Sailor that was killed along with Christian, was PO2, Daniel Francis Macey. Information given here was furnished by Find A Grave Member, Rodger Asai #47946759 and Find A Grave Member, ATC (AW) Ray Jackson, USN (Retired) #47285408. Ray's workcenter AIMD IM3 was located two decks above Christian's. Ray served aboard the USS Midway from 1980 to 1983. Our hats are off to all of these fine gentleman.
