Olga Tande Belgum
1920-2013
Olga Justine Roe Tande Belgum was born on August 8, 1920, on a homestead outside of Scobey. She died January 8, 2013 at age 92, in San Luis Obispo, California, secure in the knowledge that “God is good” and her long life was a testament to her Norwegian heritage and Christian faith.
She was the fourth of six children born to Christian and Julia Tande; their names were Adeline, Ludvig, Jeannette, Olga, Donna and Lyder. Donna Tande Lyng is the sole remaining sibling of the six, who now resides in Bowie, Maryland. Donna and Olga were close friends and inseparable companions until the day Olga passed away.
Olga always thought of Scobey as her home. She would often say, as she grew older, “Maybe I will move back to Scobey.” She kept in contact with her two nephews who still live in the area, Craig and
Brad Tande, and she treasured her Tande Grocery Store jacket. Her father, Christian, and mother, Julia, were lifelong residents of Scobey.
Olga graduated from Scobey High School with the class of 1938 and went on to college for a short time, but World War II came upon the country and she married a young Chaplain in the Army, Gerhard Belgum. Their marriage lasted for 37 years, until Gerhard’s early death at age 63.
She graduated from Luther College with honors, and upon Gerhard’s death Olga worked for several years as an Administrative Assistant at California Lutheran University. She then went to work for the Maritime Museum in Oxnard, California, until she was 75.
Upon retirement she became a docent at the Ronald Reagan Museum in Simi Valley, California, proudly wearing the red, white and blue uniform and sharing her vast knowledge of history with visitors and guests.
Olga was most proud of her five children, although sadly her son Christian John was killed in the Navy in 1980. Steve (Karen), Jeanne (John), Mark (Nikki) and Lee greatly admired their mother for her intelligence, charm, and great beauty, as well as her strong work ethic and devotion to her Christian faith.
She is also missed by her nine grandchildren, as well as her ten great grandchildren. She mourned the loss of her grandson Christopher.
She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews scattered across the country, who remember her with great fondness.
Olga was laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA next to her husband Gerhard and son Christian.
