Vogt, -- Christian A., son of Jacob and Magdelina (Showalter) Vogt, was born July 9, 1875, at Summerfield, Ill.; died at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital, where he had been a patient for two days, Nov. 5, 1951; aged 76 y. 3 m. 26 d. At an early age, he moved with his parents to the Hesston community. After living on two other farms, he located southwest of Hesston in 1918. In 1935 he retired and moved to town where he was living at the time of his death. He was baptized and joined the Mennonite Church on Nov. 17, 1889. For a number of years, he served the Garden Mennonite Church as a deacon. In 1930 he transferred his membership to the Hesston Mennonite Church, of which he was a member at the time of his death. Oct. 7, 1900, he was united in marriage to Barbara S. Ruth. To them were born 8 children, all of whom survive. This union was broken by his wife's death on March 14, 1928. Nov. 27, 1929, he was married to Cora Wenger, who survived him. He also leaves his children (Milton C., missionary in Bihar, India; Paul E., Willard M., Ralph L., and Helen-Mrs. Reuben Ewy, of Hesston; Clara-Mrs. Roy Roth, McMinnville, Oreg.; Nelson A., Newton, Kans.; and Harvey O., Halstead, Kans.), one brother (P. S. Vogt, Moundridge, Kans.), one sister (Mrs. S. S. Baumgarten, Portland, Oreg.), 25 grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. He was one of a family of 13 children. A sincere Christian, a kind husband, and a good father, he was always interested in the work of the church and community and gave freely of his time and money to both causes. Many sought his counsel and advice. When help was needed he was ready. Funeral services at Hess Memorial Hall were in charge of Milo Kauffman and M. A. Yoder. Burial was made in the Garden Mennonite Cemetery.
A Short Synopsis of the Lives of Christian A. Vogt, Barbara Selma Ruth, and Cora Wenger:
Christian August Vogt, born in 1876 near Summerfield, IL, was the son of Jacob J. Vogt and Magdalena Schowalter Vogt. When he was about 9 months old, the family moved from Summerfield, IL, to the vicinity of Moundridge, KS. Throughout Christian’s youth and into adulthood, he remained in the areas of Moundridge, KS, Halstead, KS, and Hesston, KS.
Christian dedicated his entire adult life to farming as a means of livelihood.
Barbara Selma Ruth, the daughter of John A. Ruth and Clara Ruth, underwent a similar relocation with her parents, moving from Summerfield, IL, to Halstead, KS, in 1884. It was in this region Christian and Barbara met, developing a friendship which later evolved into love. They exchanged vows on October 7, 1900, at the Garden Township Mennonite Church near Moundridge, KS.
Initially settling on a farm about four miles south of Moundridge, they lived there until the end of 1914. Subsequently, the family moved to a larger farm approximately seven miles northwest of Halstead, KS. In 1918, they relocated to a farm about a mile west of Hesston, which happened to be the home of Barbara's parents, the John Ruths.
When the Ruths moved to California, Christian and Barbara purchased their former residence and farm. Tragically, Barbara passed away on March 14, 1928. She was blessed with one granddaughter, Verna Ruth, the daughter of Paul and Edna Vogt.
On November 27, 1929, Christian married Cora Wenger of Portland, Oregon. They retired in 1935, choosing Hesston as their new home until Christian's passing on November 5, 1951. Christian lived to see twenty-five of his grandchildren.
