About Christiana Elizabeth Woods
Christena Elizabeth West was born April 17, 1865, in Washington, Utah, to Samuel Walker West and his plural wife, Christianna Johansen West. In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Washington, Utah, Christena was 5 years old living with her parents, Samuel, 66, Christianna, 42, and siblings, Isaac W., 11, Phebe W., 9, Hannah 2, and George A., 7 months old. Her father was a farmer and valued his real estate at $800 and his personal estate at $200. He was from Tennessee and her mother was from Denmark. Samuel had been married to Margaret Cooper in 1826 in Benton, Tennessee. They joined the Mormon church in 1830, and moved with their substantial family and the Mormons to Illinois in 1842. My great grandmother, Nancy Malinda West, was born there in 1844. The family traveled to the Great Salt Lake in 1851 and settled in the Parowan area. Christianna was sealed to Samuel in 1858. Samuel also had a second plural wife, Marie Hansen, known as Mary, but they never had any children together.
Samuel Walker West passed away in Washington, Utah, in 1873, when Christena was only 8 years old. In the 1880 census, she is living with her 52 year old widowed mother, Christianna, and siblings, Isaac W., 21, Hannah, 12, George 10, and Mary West, her father's second plural wife, who was 81 years old. Christianna was working as a carpet weaver, Isaac as a farm laborer, Christena worked in a factory, and the other two children were at home. Mary West was keeping house for the family.
By 1885, Christena is married to Jasper Thomas Woods, and in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census they are living in the Clover Valley, Lincoln, Nevada. Jasper is 36, Christena is listed as Elizabeth in the census, and is 35, and their children are: Maribah, 14, Laphel, 12, Dora, 11, Carlos, 8, Estella, 5, and Inez, 3. Jasper is working as a farm laborer and they own their own home free from a mortgage. Sadly, Christena passed away in December that year. Three years later Jasper married Martha Empey June 15, 1903, in Panaca, Lincoln, Nevada, and by 1910, they have had four more children, Horald E., 6, Edric E., 4, Alvin T., 3 and Lawrence W., one year two months old. And living with them are Christena and Jasper's three youngest children, Carlos, 16, Estella, 14, and Inez, 12. Jasper is still farming.
By 1920 the family is living in Junction, Piute, Utah, and Jasper is 55, Martha is 37, and their children are Harold E., 15, Edric E., 14, Alvin, 12, Lawrence W., 10, Alta Minerva, 7, and Edith Mae, 4 and a half years old. Jasper is still farming. In 1930, they are still in Junction, Utah, and living with Jasper and Martha are Alvin, 23, Lawrence, 21, and Edith, 14. Jasper is still farming and his son Alvin is working as common labor, probably on the family farm. Sadly, Jasper passed away on July 17, 1930, from chronic myocarditis which he had for 12 years, and is buried in Garland, Box Elder, Utah. After Jasper passed away, Martha Elizabeth Empey Woods married Willard Barlow, September 22, 1939, in Circleville, Piute, Utah. Sadly, he passed away just a few years later on June 24, 1945 in Piute county, Utah. Fourteen years later, Martha passed away on June 5, 1959 in Tooele, Utah.
