ASSHETON, Christopher, Esq. (?the elder?). Of Fyfield, Berkshire. One of the ringleaders in Sir Henry Dudley?s conspiracy, and proclaimed a traitor in April 1556. He was indicted with the other conspirators but had already fled to France, where he became the center of plots against Mary, and was characterized by Wotton as a ?craftier fox than Thomas Satfford.? He fitted up ships to prfey upon the Spanish treasure galleons bound for the Low Countries. In May 1557 he planned a descent upon the English coast at Weymouth, of which Wotton informed the Council. (NOTE: Henry Dudley, the conspirator, was Christopher Ashton?s son in law, having married his daughter, Elizabeth, in 1545 in Fyfield. It is no surprise that Ashton was caught up in Dudley?s conspiracy.)

WalterLoveden, of Fyfield, Berkshire, Tudor conspirator and Recusant was the stepson-in-law of Christopher Assheton (also Ashton) of Fyfield, Berkshire, a Tudor conspirator against Philip and Mary [see Richard III Society ref - Dudley's Conspiracy]. Assheton was the fourth and last husband of Catherine Gordon (of Huntly - an ancestral aunt of mine), supposed Duchess of York, who had married the pretender Perkin Warbeck, so-called Duke of York (who had claimed to be one of the "Princes in in the Tower"). Walter was mentioned in Ashton's treasonous plat against Queen Mary but later pardoned and profited from his association with Christopher Assheton's demise, by being granted property of Ashton's by Queen Mary.

He was a gentleman usher of the King's Chamber.

Christopher Ashton was the fourth husband of Lady Catherine Gordon.

He is the father of Lady Elizabeth Ashton Dudley by a previous wife not known to me.

Sir Christopher and Lady Catherine were known to be buried in the church of St. Nicholas at Fyfield, with a monument, including brass figures (now lost).

wikipedia page for Catherine Gordon states she had no children but was step-mother to two children from Christopher Ashton's previous marriage. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Catherine_Gordon

Research notes

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ashton-863

How did he die eight years before the conspiracy that he was involved in and stood trial for? I suspect there are three generations of Christophers that are being squished into one. 1. Christopher I married Lady Gordon at 1516 and died in 1548, probably born about 1470. 2. Chris I had two children of a previous wife, so Chris II and someone. Chris II could be Chris Sr born 1493 and tried for treason in 1556. 3. Chris II aka Chris Sr had a son Chris Jr or Chris III who was on trial with Chris Sr for treason of Dudley's conspiracy in 1556. He would likely be born about 1513-1530.
