Christopher was born or baptized 12 August 1720, He was the son of Christopher Choate and Flora (possibly Hawkins). He removed with his parents and siblings from Maryland to Virginia after 1745.[1]

He passed away about 1800.[2]

Who was his wife?

When he joined his father in selling land in Maryland on 20 May 1742, his mother’s name was included but no wife. This suggests Christopher was still single then.

The Choates are an early Maryland family. The men are well documented, the women not so much.

The only record for a Prudence Choate is from a DAR application for Revolutionary War soldier Christopher Choate, born Bedford County, VA 1750, lived in 96 District South Carolina for many years (and served from there), then moved to different locations in Tennessee, where he later died. The application says:

"Prudence Choate Wife of Isham Dykes born 1782 in Tenn,; died April 5, 1862 in Altamont, Tenn (Grundy Co.) and was buried at Philadelphia, Tenn. (Warrenn County). Her father was Christopher Choate and her mother was Prudence(?). "

But if Prudence Choate Dyke was born in 1782, then she is likely to be daughter of Christopher IV not Christopher III.

Christopher, 3rd, second child of Christopher, 2nd. and Flora Choate, was twenty years old when he inherited Choate's Contrivance upon the death of his older brother, Augustin, in 1740. Due to ever worsening economic conditions and bitter political squabbling, many planters sold out or simply abandoned their fields and struck out for the newly opened land of the south and southwest. Beckoning fortune and adventure had great appeal to the pioneering spirit of the young. It may have been this urge for a better future that led Christopher to sell out.

According to an indenture dated May 29th 1742 in which Christopher Choate, Jr.(3rd.) is described as "heir at law of Augustine Choate, deceased, “Nathaniel Gist at the request of Christopher Choate, Jr. conveys another parcel of land to James Killey for the account and by order of the said Augustine Choate of the value of twenty pounds, receipt acknowledged by Christopher Choate, Jr., and the said Christopher Choate, Jr., sells to William Lewis - -Choate's Contrivance lying in Baltimore County on the west side of Gwins Falls - near a run called the Horse Head Branch or Glade - containing one hundred acres.(See Balto.Cty.Land Rec.Vol.TB#A,ff,202-4,MHR)

NOTE: The above described location of Choate's Contrivance would indicate it was near, if not a part of, the NW section of the property on which McDonogh School was established in 1850 and which at one time was owned by the Gist family.

On May 20, 1742, nine days before the above transaction Christopher 3rd. joined with his father in the sale of Choate's Fancy to Nathaniel Gist for fifty pounds sterling. In this indenture the father, Christopher 2nd.is described as Sr. and Christopher 3rd.as .Jr. Flora, wife of the father, assigns her rights but in neither this nor the above indenture did a wife of the son participate, which suggests he was not married (Bal.Cty.Ld.Rec.1742, Vol.TB#A,ff.155-57)

There are no further records in Maryland of Christopher Choate, 3rd. or of his younger brothers, Richard and Zabrit. However, all three are listed as tithables (taxpayers) in Lunenburg County, Virginia, in 1749. Later years finds their descendants scattered throughout the Carolinas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and the southwest.
