-------------------------------------------
CHRISTIAN MATTHEW LOTZE was born in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio. October 8, 1850, a son of the late Adolphus Lotze, who was a native of the Kingdom of Hanover, born in 1812, and came to this country in 1833, a poor young man, but full of energy and inventive genius- He formed the firm of Lotze & Lohn, in the carrying on of a stove business on the southeast corner of Fifth and Vine streets, Cincinnati, and invented the first warm air furnace ever manufactured in this country. At the time of his death, December 11, 1877, Adolphus Lotze was the head of the well-known firm of A. Lotze & Sons, manufacturers of ranges and furnaces, now composed of AH Lotze, FB Lotze and Adolphus Bering. His venerable widow (whose maiden name was Magdalena Bering), the mother of CM Lotze, is a native of the Kingdom of Bavaria, and still resides with her unmarried children in Cincinnati, the head of a large family of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The subject of this sketch is a graduate of Woodward High School, since 1869; read law under the late Stanley Matthews of the United States Supreme Court. and graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1871, after which he attended the universities of Leipsic, Heidelberg and Berlin (Germany) until 1873, when returning to America he began the practice of his profession, in October of that year, in the law offices of Stallo & Kittredge, in Cincinnati. In 1875 he formed the law firm of Lotze & Bettinger, which continued into the year 1880, since when he has been practicing law, without a partner, in his office in the Wiggins block, which is built on the same corner of Fifth and Vine streets, where his father had his business nearly sixty years ago. On October 5, 1876, he re-visited Europe, and there married his cousin, Emma Magdalena Lotze, a daughter of Prof. William Lotze, in the city of Hanover, having become engaged to her in 1871, while studying law in Leipsic, Mr. Lotze is a Democrat in principle, although his father and brothers were all Republicans, becoming a free-trader in his youth at high school and later an enthusiastic supporter of President Cleveland, with whom he had a personal interview in Albany in October, 1884, upon political questions prior to his election to the Presidency, and with whom he found he was in full accord upon the tariff, civil service reform and financial questions. Mr. Lotze has never held office, but has been a candidate for the legislature and for Judge of the Common Pleas Court, though too little of a politician to be successful- He was also identified as a leader in the Municipal Reform movement in April, 1883, and in the Highland House Independent Democratic movement, which held its convention in College Hall in September, 1883, and of which he was chairman. He was president of the Friends of Inquiry, which society became well known and popular by its meetings for social and scientific discussions in the Unitarian edifice on Eighth and Plum streets. He is one of the original and leading advocates of cremation, and together with his brother-in-law, CA Nulsen, Esq., instigated the formation of the Cincinnati Cremation Company, which was formed at his office in September, 1884, and of which he is still one of the officers.

Mr. Lotze and his wife and children---Edmund William Lotze and Erna Magdalen Lotze-reside on East Ridgeway avenue, Avondale. He is in the. full vigor of manhood, active in the practice of his chosen profession, and jest as enthusiastic as ever in the propagation of his political and philosophical principles of progress.

CHRISTIAN MATTHEW LOTZE.

A member of the Hamilton county bar for thirty-eight years, Christian Matthew Lotze can claim a remarkably wide acquaintance with practice of the law, and the high esteem in which he is held by his brother attorneys and the people of Cincinnati is evidence of his ability and personal worth. He is a native of Cincinnati and was born near the foot of Jackson street in 1851, a son of Adolphus and Magdalene (Bering) Lotze. The father was bom in Hanover, Germany. At the age of eighteen he came to America and worked at his trade as tinner in Baltimore, Philadelphia and Pittsburg. In 183 1 he arrived at Cincinnati and engaged in business at the southeast comer of Fifth and Vine streets, where the Wiggins block now stands. Mr. Lotze built the first hot air fumace west of the Alleghany mountains, which he installed in 1839, and received a patent upon his system of hot air heating. He was promi- nently identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and was also a member of the Lutheran church. The mother of our subject emigrated to America from Landau, Bavaria, with seven brothers and six sisters when she was fifteen years of age and came to Cincinnati from New York city via the Erie canal and overland from Buflfalo. She was a daughter of Balthazar Bering, one of the secretaries of Napoleon Bonaparte, and was a descendant of the celebrated navigator Bering who discovered Bering strait. The name was originally Von Bering but the "von" was dropped when members of the family became connected with Napoleon in revolutionary times.

Christian M. Lotze received his preliminary education in the public schools and subsequently became a student at Woodward high school, from which he was graduated in 1869. Having decided to devote his attention to the legal pro- fession, he began the study of law under Hon. Stanley Matthews, who was judge of the common pleas court of Hamilton county and later was United States senator and justice of the supreme court of the United States. Mr. Lotze attended lectures at the Cincinnati Law School and was graduated in 1871, with the degree of LL. B. He was too young for admission to the bar at the time of his graduation and he pursued his studies further in Europe, enter- ing Leipsic University in October, 1871, Heidelberg University in May, 1872, and the University of Beriin in October, 1872, thus coming into contact with many of the great scholars and teachers of the world. In September, 1873, he returned to Cincinnati and was admitted to the bar, entering the law office of Stallo & Kittredge. He continued with this firm until June, 1875, when he formed a partnership with Albert Bettinger imder the title of Lotze & Bettingcr, with offices in the Third National Bank building. This partnership was main- tained until October, 1880, when Mr. Bettinger withdrew and Mr. Lotze has since practiced alone. He has maintained his office in the Wiggins building, being the first attorney to move from Eighth to Fifth street. He is an earnest and indefatigable worker, an able advocate and counselor and has been identified with much of the important litigation in the county, state and federal courts. As he is a good reasoner and a clear and convincing speaker, he has won many causes even when pitted against recognized leaders of the bar.

In 1876 Mr. Lotze made a second trip to Europe in order to fulfill an en- gagement upon which he had entered in 1871, and was married to Emma Mag- dalene I-otze, a daughter of William Lotze, of Hanover, Germany. The father was a relative of Professor Rudolph Herman Lotze, a noted German philoso- pher and psychologist who died at Berlin in 1881. To this union two children have been born : Edmund William, of this city ; and Erna, who is a teacher in the public schools and is also a teacher of German, French and Spanish in the Young Women's Christian Association. Politically Mr. Lotze has from the time of reaching manhood given his support to the democratic party. He was a candidate for member of the school board but was defeated. He also was a candidate upon the democratic ticket for state senator at a time when the entire democratic ticket was defeated. He has taken a prominent part in seven diflFerent reform movements and has been very active and efficient in work which has resulted in direct benefit to the city. He has never been connected with any fraternal or religious organization but is a member of the Ham- ilton County Bar Association and is also identified with the Cincinnati Crema- tion Society, which he assisted in organizing in 1884, Qemens A. Nulsen being one of his associates in this undertaking. He was for a number of years an active member of the German Literary Club. Having been thoroughly equipped for his profession, he has been eminently successful and has long been known as a learned and able member of the bar. In matters of citizenshp he has ever been loyal and public-spirited and he is fully entitled to the hig^ esteem in which he is held by the community where he has been known from his boyhood.
