When she was 15 she had emigrated to America along with 7 brothers and 6 sisters.Her journey from New York City was by Erie Canal to Buffalo and thence overland to Cincinnati.Of her family is written that:She was a daughter of Baltazar Bering,one of the secretaries of Napoleon Bonaparte,and was a descendant of the celebrated navigator(Vitus)Bering who disovered the Bering Strait.The name was originally Von Bering but the "von" was dropped when members of the family became connected with Napoleon in revolutionary times.
